Outboard motor anode. This is another example of a sacrificial anode, which electrochemically protect a more valuable (typically steel) object from corrosion. In this case, the object to be protected is an outboard motor. How often the anode has to be replaced depends on the kind of water the motor is used in: Around here I am told they last pretty much forever.
